what we’re about

Simmonds Stewart was founded in 2006 by corporate lawyer Andrew Simmonds and commercial lawyer Victoria Stewart.

In 2012, we decided to focus exclusively on the technology sector, one of New Zealand’s fastest growing business segments.  Since then, we haven’t looked back.  We have doubled in size, have become a household name in the local tech scene, and have established a growing client base in Southeast Asia and Australia.

But we are not stopping there. Inspired by the many great companies we get to work with, we have ambitious plans to grow our business in New Zealand and offshore.

It’s a pretty simple recipe.

We hire talented lawyers who love working in the technology sector. We give them great tools to work with and empower them to help our clients do business, rather than sweating the small stuff.

We go deep in our specialist field – tech start-ups, capital raising, m&a, governance and contracts – so we can give our clients the best advice as efficiently as possible.

Finally we innovate when we see benefits for our clients.  For example, when we decided to focus exclusively on the tech industry vertical, the first thing we did was open-source our library of tech legal templates.  By providing our clients the tools to manage the legal basics themselves, and surfacing the issues they need to really focus on, it’s lowered their legal spend.  It’s also allowed us to focus on the mission critical work that our clients know really counts.

our work is international

Technology is a global industry and most of our clients have international business models.

We help them negotiate customer, channel and partner agreements around the world.  We advise them on capital raising transactions involving international investors.  And we help them with international acquisitions and exits.

At times it feels like we are working in a business hub like London, New York, Singapore or Hong Kong.  Which we think is pretty cool for a Kiwi law firm.
